Following the shape of the crystal, the whale is engraved as a shadowy mass on the far side. In the foreground, the thickness of the crystal giving an illusion of intervening space, is engraved a rowboat. Its oarsmen pull against a heaving sea. At its prow stands a one-legged man about to hurl his harpoon into the whale.
